Indigenous Foster Care
In 2021, a family associated with ICDI took in a 14–year–old recently orphaned adolescent mother and her newborn baby. In the following months and years, we found ourselves caring for 13 children between two families, raising our awareness of the desperate need for culturally appropriate solutions for at–risk indigenous children in our area.In response, Säkeklä Sa Ra (in English, “God with us”) was formed with the vision to identify, train, and accompany believing Cabécar families to take in at–risk indigenous children thereby minimizing the trauma of separation by maintaining geographical, cultural, and language familiarity.

Our ultimate goal is to provide opportunities for healing for each child through connections and love, and, when possible, work with their families of origin for reunification and reintegration. We are currently undergoing training with the Costa Rican NGO Casa Viva, as well as working with the local authorities in completing the requisites to develop and launch this program.
